Blaming low turn out (what else did they expect?) and poor (thousands of dollars worth) of advertising for the first failure, the SA is again trying to increase student fees.
Instead of cutting spending, which would ,you know, make sense, our elected representatives want to take more money and waste it. They try to spin it off by saying that the fee increase will effect students beginning with the class of 2012. Honestly, people coming in are already paying a crap load to come here, and I yea 50cents and hour seems like a drop in the bucket, but it is the principal of the matter. The SA is just going to continue to throw out large amounts of money to student orgs with great social and popular appeal (F.E.E.D, Voices for Choices) but that actually do very little for the community. Unless of course shadow exploratory committees, feeding the homeless with Starbucks biscotti, Dildo Raffles and vagina cookie bake sales really inspire you to go out and "change" the world.
I'll be voting "No", in case there was any confusion.

It's a good thing that only about six people will be misinformed by all of that, but for the sake of accuracy:
"Instead of cutting spending, which would ,you know, make sense..."
Cutting spending is all this year's SA has been doing with money. They (especially Capp and Matt Cohen) seem to be as opposed to Thorpian policies as much as Hunter in that regard. They didn't spend a dime on condoms or any other wasteful program, charged for Colonial Coach, and it doesn't appear they'll even be running that in the Spring. Thorpe spent around $70,000. Capp is on pace to spend about $20,000 (most of which goes to running an office).
The Senate's spending went from about $12,000 last year to under $1,000 this year. The court hasn't even met enough to spend a dime.
"our elected representatives want to take more money and waste it."
One of the problems with blogging has always been its propensity for relying on instinct rather than on fact.
Though the SA has traditionally been seen as a money waster, Capp and Cohen implemented strict limits on spending.
Together, they passed a bill that reduced the maximum amount of student fee money that could be spent by the SA itself to 8%. 8% PERCENT!!!
Capp and Cohen consciously did this to avoid the wasteful spending they worked so hard to eliminate this year.
So with at least 92% of any increase going straight to student orgs, it's quite a stretch to call this a money grab.
"and I yea 50cents and hour seems like a drop in the bucket"
0.00014% actually.
"The SA is just going to continue to throw out large amounts of money to student orgs with great social and popular appeal"
I suppose it's subjective whether or not you think that's appropriate.
"F.E.E.D"
Capp vetoed the bill. OG is personally liable for any contract he wrongfully signed. Accountability is alive in the SA.
"Unless of course shadow exploratory committees, feeding the homeless with Starbucks biscotti, Dildo Raffles and vagina cookie bake sales really inspire you to go out and "change" the world."
Vagina cookie bake sales and dildo raffles might inspire me but go over SA records and find me one dollar that was spent on "shadow exploratory committees" or "feeding the homeless with Starbucks biscotti." There wasn't one.
Capp, Kroeger, and Cohen have done a tremendous job this year at not only cutting spending but establishing a new culture in the SA that refocuses on student orgs, student needs, and vilifies costly initiatives. Capp has been ingenious in her methods for cutting spending through corporate sponsorships and advertising and has made great use of good old fashioned cost cutting.
No wonder, she's a Republican...
Just an FYI, the Senate 1000$ last year too. If anything, Brand went from 1000$ in spending from last year to 999.99$.
Woot, gotta love the penny!
it's seven.
and judging by the way this next SA election might turn out, F.E.E.D will getting that money anyway.
Thank you for not refuting the fact that my student fees are going to vagina cookie bake sales, that much I appreciate about your comment.
No one should leave comments that long, it really is just rather sad. But thanks for reading!
"and judging by the way this next SA election might turn out, F.E.E.D will getting that money anyway."
Lord help us...
"No one should leave comments that long, it really is just rather sad. But thanks for reading!"
Refuting baseless guesses takes time!
your fees are also going to organizations like YAF... and CDs and CRs and IAS and theatre groups and Global Languages and club sports.
more money might mean more vagina cookies, but it would also mean more speakers, more campaign trips, more concerts. organizations with legitimate purposes, events, and needs shouldn't be punished for the others who manage themselves poorly or who use their money in ways you disagree with.
let them collect their own money then.
like i said, it's a good thing only 6 people read this
