If it feels like we've been here before, it's because we have. Many times. In fact, we were here last October.
My position hasn't really changed. (It probably won't change until the Oxford English Dictionary decides to alter the spelling of the word "unnecessary.") This new proposal, though, takes the dark comedy of S.A. politics to a new extreme. It is now possible to be disgusted by S.A. fee increase proposals without even opposing a fee increase.
The proposal is not just a fee hike, you see. Actually, it's not even a fee-hike for those of us currently studying at GW. The increase goes into effect starting with next year's freshmen (the Class of 2012).
I wonder what this reveals about the S.A. Having failed before to pass a referendum on more straightforward plans to raise the fee, they now throw the student body a bone. Instead of voting yourself higher taxes, they now want you simply to vote higher taxes for other people who can't vote in their own interest. What sort of students do they think we are? Imagine a vote on Social Security Policy in which people under the age of 65 are disenfranchised. We are the senior citizens, and the AARP is the S.A. Now you get the idea.
The referendum might pass--a prospect that scares me even more. If we side with an S.A. which has been publicly described as "determined" to pass this fee increase, we're just greedy--not willing to pony up our own fair share, but more than willing to force others to do it for us. We'll be just as low as the S.A. thought we were, and that's pretty damned low.
