I arrived a little late, about an hour late, but the "rally" seemed to still be going on. I'm not sure if anyone gave a speech or said anything before I arrived, but it seemed to me that it was just a group of about 15 or so student, all dressed in black, standing around and chit-chatting.
As expected OG and his associate Dick Fowler were in attendance, as was some-time accomplice Andrew Cooper. No sign of Lamar Thorpe, but it he might have just left before I got there. One person in attendance that I found curious was that of Michael Tapscott, the director of the Multicultural Student Services Center here at GW.
I have never personally met Mr. Tapscott but from what I have heard he is an upstanding guy and seems to get along with most people. I just find it concerning that a University official was attending a student led and organized rally. One would imagine the University would want to remain neutral and not apart of a student-led, student-organized protest/rally. Mr. Tapscott's attendance at the rally is most peculiar, raising questions of what exactly the University's stance is on issues that are and should be of no concern to it, and what exactly the conduct of Administrator should be towards such student-led activities.

Was Tapscott dressed in all black too?
I do believe Tim Miller was there too, although he didnt speak. Its important for university administrators to know exactly whats going on with students, and exactly how students feel at the school. I praise Mr Tapscott for speaking, and Mr Miller for being in attendance.
Mr Tapscott especially should have been there as the head advocator for multicultural students rights at GW. Dont try and misconstrue his attendance as sending the wrong message, because his absence would've sent the far worse message that he doesn't care. And that, being the upstanding guy and great friend that he is, is not the case
you know that your a racist, no need to lie to the people!
Who's a racist?
I believe it's "you're".
I am a found believer in what doesnt kill you makes you stronger.
Unfortunately for Sean Bell and his family, they did kill him, however as a community we can not let his life and his death go unnoticed. Kanye West says it best, "Racism is still alive, they just be concealing it"
It is our duty as not as blacks, but a people who respect the sanctity of human life to shed light on these injustices that occurr in our country.
They tried to kill OG's spirit, but he is stronger now than he was before.
It seems as if whenever blacks in leadership positions are not being good house negroes and cooning themselves out, there is animosity sent towards them. Its ridiculous and childish.
There is a blatent problem that plaugues our campus. BITCHASSNESS. And it seems if you try to check someone on this campus, especially if your black, there will be negative consequences. So many students come here and live double lives. They were the biggest tools and losers in there respective hometowns and they come here a pretend to be everything there not. They might fool you, but they dont fool me.
And in regards to Mr. Tapscott being there, open your eyes. He is black if you didnt notice. And this is a black issue so it is neccessary that his was in attendance.
So black-on-black crime is a racism problem? 3 of the cops were minorities....
The people pushing this false civil rights agenda are so clueless they don't even see the facts of a case. Instead, like a broken record, they simply fall back on the same old tired lines and cliches, a complete intellectual bankruptcy.
yea three of the cop were black but the white cop unloaded two full clips spraying 31 shots into the car.
"ignorance is bliss"...
...accurately named.
..third cop was hispanic.
Not to pick at old scabs here, but I just came across this blog posting at The Root. http://www.theroot.com/id/46086?from=rss
I'd encourage you to take a look at it. Black-on-black violence is so high in America, and it is very, very likely that a lot of that has to do with the news and entertainment media perpetuating a belief that young black men are dangerous. I can't refer you to any specific study on it, because my reading and understanding of it has only barely scratched the surface, but people in America are taught to fear black people and associate them as criminals.
A couple of questions, in the hopes of anticipating your points:
1. Did the police know Sean Bell's prior arrest record before they shot him? If not, was shooting to kill reasonable?
2. Even if black men commit a higher rate of crimes in America, does our justice system encourage police to assume criminal behavior because of the color of skin?
I'm sorry, but it seems likely to me that this was at BEST a terrible mistake and failure of protocol. I believe that in reality, while there was no explicit desire to kill black men involved, implicit and subconscious racial perceptions played a role here, and they need to be discussed and modified in this country so the law and its practice can be aligned.
Dave and previous posters,
I urge you to remember two things:
1) The first shot was first by the African-American officer.
2) Police officers are trained to unload their clips when they fire on a suspect. Sure the officers did not know Mr. Bell's previous record, but they also did not know if he or his companions were armed. Additionally, I imagine being placed in such a situtation (whether or not it was factually life threatnening, once again put yourself in the officers' shoes) caused adrenaline and fear to overtake all the officers involved. I doubt the officers would have fired one less round had the suspect been Asian-American, Hispanic-American, or European-American.
Bottom line is this is an issue of a decision made under stressful, unpredictable, and potentially life threatening conditions. It is at very best a protocal issue. It is not a race issue.
I hope I did not make any inadvertent typos on this post, otherwise I may also be called a racist by some members of our student body.
Does it really matter what the race of the cops were? NO. They could be purple people from another planet. That doesn't change the fact that another child is growing up without a father, another mother is raising kids along...and FOR WHAT? BECAUSE SOME COPS THOUGHT HE FIT THE 'PROFILE.'
The profile is the same as it is on GW campus. A black or hispanic male about 5'9-5'11, dark brown hair. I don't believe that as many crimes happen on this campus as they say, but that's another story.
Black and hispanic males fitting that description commit the most crimes. It is unfortunate, but it is a statistical fact.
