Last Friday night (April 4th) in front of Funger Hall, where Delta Gamma was having their skit-night for their philanthropy event Anchor Bowl, there was a circle of about 5 UPD and MPD cops surrounding a man who was sitting on the side-walk in the middle a drunken, tear-soaked tirade; that person was former Dining Services Commission chair and two-time SA Presidential Candidate, Casey Pond.
There was a semi-large gaggle of people standing around, and a Hatchet Photographer busily walking around the scene taking pictures, with a Phi Psi (who shall remain nameless) obscuring his camera and moving with the photographer wherever he went. Eventually the photographer was able to pass it to another person who was able to take clear pictures of the scene. The photographers were both able to capture Mr. Pond sobbing on the ground, pleading or muttering unintelligible babble to the cops who were arresting him. And the second Psi Phi could be seen making, what were surely damage control phone calls off to the side, all the while telling on-lookers "Don't worry about it".
The reason for Mr. Pond's arrest is up to speculation, some say he fought a fellow Phi Psi and the cops were simply breaking it up, if so where and who was the other Phi Psi? Again, some say that he was fighting someone and in the chaos of breaking it up Pond hit a cop; still, where's the other person? The more prevalent and more likely theory was that Mr. Pond was belligerently intoxicated and as UPD attempting to remove him from the Funger premises, he became violent and struck one of the officers, causing his arrest.
That, however, is only part of the story, or lack-there of. The story, which one would think would be fairly note-worthy did not make The Hatchet blog, and to be fair to the Daily Colonial it didn't make their blog either, and neither did GWblogspot, nor Monday's edition of the Hatchet. The Crime log comes out on Thursday, and one would assume that this incident would be in there. However, with an incident like this, one would think that it would have merited coverage in Monday's Hatchet, or at the very least the blog. But then again a story about a prominent member of a fraternity getting arrested for striking a cop would not look good next to a story about how that fraternity is taking over the SA, would it?
If the story is printed in Thursday's edition, than I will stand (thankfully) corrected and will know that the Hatchet isn't sitting on stories just to help other stories the paper is writing. But if they don't publish it and it is nothing more than a blip on the crime log, then it will bring into question just exactly what type of journalism those at the Hatchet are involved in.
..more on this as it develops.

Is the Hatchet sitting on a story?

Maybe check for a police report?
Out of curiosity, Hunter, where did you hear this "theories" about why Mr. Pond was being arrested?
Were you there when it happened?
I didn't witness the scuffle, but I did witness the arrest and subsequent chaos outside. The theories I have were complied from what was being discussed by the on-lookers of the arrest, myself included.
I have spoken to several people who swear to have witnessed Casey Pond strike the police officer and that he was arrested and later released for that reason.
I could even write a headline for the Hatchet: "CASEY POND ARRESTED: Spoiled Rich Kid Cries Like Baby While Being Arrested For Assault!"
It's a wonder they don't hire me as an editor right this moment.
Casey Pond is no longer affiliated with the SA and has not been all year. Furthermore, why is it the Hatchet's job to cover every arrested student. The story should be in the crime watch and nothing more.
He was a very influential member of the SA and is still considered to be an important member of the GW community. If it is in the general interest of the student body (and judging all of the people that have approached me about the incident, it is) than the Hatchet should report it.
Calling casey pond an important member of the student body is humorous. I'm sure he'd be flattered by the light you view him in. I think everyone who was there "saw" what happened. There are vast conspiracies out there about what allegedly happened. It's old news, time to move on...I've only met him in passing, but I think people should just let him be.
It's in the crime log.
The Colonialist has one post and another post regarding this.
I don't think there are any influential members of the SA... the way the university has structured the SA, it has minimal power. In my four years here, I can't think of a single thing the SA did that affected me.
Also, Casey used to work for the Hatchet.
This is the most boring non-story I can remember since I read, oh, I don't know, the last edition of the Hatchet?
