I enjoy being an omnivore. I think it is one of greatest evolutionary gifts that we has humans have the ability to eat either a plant or an animal or both. However, there are many in this world who do not like this ability, and actually protest against it, mostly in regards to our ability to consume flesh of animals. Calling themselves "Animal Rights" Activists, they claim that is inhuman, unethical and cruel for us to consume animals that are of a lower evolutionary class than ourselves. They rationalize this, or attempt to at least, by claiming that since animals can feel pain, just like us, they are there-by equal to us and should not be eaten just because they are considered biologically inferior and do not actively resist.
They express this belief in two different dietary habits The first and most common, Vegetarianism, is just a simple refusal to consume animal flesh; I find this to be most acceptable considering that people do it for a whole variety of reasons, not just because they are against consuming animal flesh on "ethical" ground. The second, and oddest, is Veganism. Vegans are, for the most part ( aside from medical reasons that prevent some people from consuming animal products , though this is rare) animal-crazies. They are so much into the rights of Animals that they refuse to consume ANYTHING that has been derived from an animal; that includes meat, eggs, milk (and milk derived products), gelatin (which comes from the joints of animals), and anything else that one time or another came from an animal.
For many years I have giggled and scoffed at this culinary phenomenon, thinking that their options were somewhat limited, that was before yesterday. Now, I'm not saying that Vegans are not any less crazy and way off in their evaluation of the Human place in the great all-might food chain, but I have to say that their food is not horrible. Yesterday I went with a friend of mine to a place called Sticky Fingers Bakery, a bakery that specializes in baking and selling vegan pastries, cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods that you would normally think had to contain animal product. Walking in a skeptic, I had a Vegan Cinnamon Sticky Bun for breakfast. It was absolutely delicious, tasting exactly like one that was made with Animal product, and not to mention it was a lot healthier too (low in saturated fats and cholesterol). Continuing my culinary adventure, but mostly satisfying my need to grab a quick lunch to-go, I purchased their version of a BLT, veganly called a TLT (with tempure(tofu)-bacon and fake mayonnaise). The sandwich contained zero-cholesterol and was extremely low in Saturated fat, all while retaining the taste and the deliciousness that is Bacon, lettuce and tomato together in a sandwich.
Now, before everyone starts going off on me, calling me a Crunch Con or just a flat-out Hippie, let me say that I still think Vegans are crazy and mistaken in their "ethical" decision not to consume animal products, but damn-it if they don't make some pretty good food.

In and Out is the reason I could never be a vegetarian. That being said meat makes me sick so I tend to eat a mostly vegetarian diet (granted this also makes me sick). I may have to try this place though
Is it expensive?
moderately priced. its also up in Columbia Heights, so its a bit of a hike.
Vegans and vegetarians tend to be good cooks. I think it's partly because they have to be good, versatile cooks, or their diet would be intolerable (imagine eating McDonald's food everyday, without the meat). Partly, though, it's also because vegans and vegetarians tend to be well-off enough to be able to afford good food whether or not it has meat.
Vegetarian food isn't bad at all--but it can be hit or miss. For every "Sticky Fingers Bakery," there are 10 grocery stores selling inedible tofu "buffalo wings." Personally, I think their cuisine is best when it doesn't try to imitate meat.
